One weekend during the warm and sunny month of May, Jonathan and the Workham Media film crew flew to Venice. They were there to film the Venice edition of Jonathan’s Journal. During their stay they explored the city, built on a lagoon and made up of 118 small islands linked by over 400 bridges. They ventured into the lesser know corners discovering history, traditions and some incredible food. What is striking about the city is the run down chic of the buildings, perched on the edge of the canal where many have been situated for as long as 800 years.
Their home for the weekend was the majestic Ca’Sagredo, a luxury hotel and museum in its own right, situated on the edge of the Grand Canal. Journeying through the hotel, the team were witness to the style and beauty of the building which has been standing since the 15th century. Originally a private home, the palace is a national monument and each room tells the story of times gone by. The impressive marble staircase, flanked by stunning frescos, open up into the public rooms, designed for the most flamboyant historic society events and which make the perfect venue for weddings and banquets today.
Thanks to International Limousine Service, the 30 minute water transfer ride from Marco Polo airport was slick and comfortable and they arrived at the hotel in no time.
Jonathan was joined by Anna Baccanello from Azure Collection, a travel specialist in her own right with Italian roots and a passion for the country.
The hotel is located opposite the Rialto Market. Touring Rialto market with hotel chef Remo Marchiori was a treat for the senses. A short gondola trip across the Grand Canal brought the team to the market which has been whetting local appetites for centuries. With their guide from Travel Curious and chef Remo they toured the market, visually devouring pyramids of seasonal produce and savouring samples on the way. They learnt what to look for when buying specific produce and can see why many locals do their own shopping here on a daily basis.
Part of the history and tradition of Venice are the traditional Cicchetti (meaning ‘small plates’), small dishes of food served at traditional bars around Venice. As part of their culinary tour with their expert guide from Travel Curious they visited several Cicchetti in pretty streets tasting delicious morsels accompanied by a glass of prosecco.
Having shopped for ingredients at Rialto Market, the team savoured chef Remo’s creations during their stay. Dining at Ca’Sagredo is a culinary journey, where heritage and pride continue across to the creative menu which celebrates Italy and the local flavours of Venice.
